Beyoncé’s mantra of “Girl Power” stemmed from her
earlier days with Destiny Child, with hits like “Survivor,” which is an
anthem that has struck a particular chord with young girls and women. It has helped make her the poster woman of empowerment. The lyrics “you thought that I'd be weak without you, but I'm stronger,” is explanatory of the feminist attitude which is not reliant on male support. lIt does not depict “Destiny’s attitude tending to the supplicatory and subservient” as
McCormick suggests: “You thought that I'd be weak without you, But I'm stronger
/ You thought that I'd be broke without you But I'm richer / You thought that
I'd be sad without you / I laugh harder.” (Emma Gannon, telegraph) “The song itself is about women who go
through breaks-ups and thriving in the aftermath, to pick yourself up and brush
the dirt off your soldiers. The three fiercely independent women are styled in
the sense of sexy survivors living on an uninhabited island in the video”. Encouraging girls to keep on the fight whilst maintaining dignity.
The video and song translate into a great story; they are both entwined
with one another not confusing the message. The video itself has become iconic
with 6,832,993 hits on YouTube and 21,473 likes, also the song is still as popular as it
was then, with the masses snatching it up on iTunes.
